What a standard installation covers
- Pod: up to 15 m of cable from the meter or fuse board, a hole through a wall up to 500 mm, connections and protection, an extra three-way consumer unit if required, and up to 3 m of conduit. Pod says over 90% of customers qualify.
- BOXT: up to 5 m of cable fixed to the wall up to 1.8 m high, a hole up to 500 mm, a Type A RCD/RCBO, up to 3 m of conduit, an earth rod in soft ground, testing, NICEIC certification and a demo. BOXT says a Matt:e box may cost extra.
- Ohme: says most UK homes qualify for its standard installation and offers custom installation for the rest. Its page doesn’t list the details.
- Octopus: “from £949 including standard installation”. We didn’t find a published list of what that includes.
Work outside the standard package, such as trenching cable underground, running it on poles, or upgrading old wiring, is quoted separately. Pod says it quotes before any extra work and refunds in full if you cancel. Pod also points on-street households to a council-approved pavement channel through its partner Kerbo Charge.
The OZEV grant: up to £500 off, for some households
OZEV’s home grants were extended for a final year and are funded until 31 March 2027. The flats and renters grant and the on-street parking grant both pay 75% of the cost to buy and install a socket, up to £500. On a £949 installation, 75% is £711.75, so the grant is capped at £500 and you would pay £449. Homeowners living in a house aren’t eligible for either. You must apply and get OZEV’s confirmation before the charger is installed. Check in a minute with the OZEV grant checker.
Running costs after installation
A typical EV doing 8,000 miles uses about 2,216 kWh a year: about £168 at Intelligent Octopus Go’s 7.6p and £583 at the 26.32p cap. Compare tariffs on the whole bill with the EV tariff savings calculator, and petrol against electric with the EV vs petrol calculator.
Questions people ask
How much does it cost to install a home EV charger in the UK?
The published starting prices we checked on 15 October 2026, including standard installation, ran from £909 (BOXT, Masterplug) to £1,299 (BOXT, Tesla). Octopus and the Ohme ePod start at £949, and Pod Point and the Ohme Home Pro at £999. Extra work such as trenching is quoted separately.
What does a standard installation include?
It varies by installer. Pod includes up to 15 m of cable, a hole through a wall up to 500 mm, an extra consumer unit if needed and up to 3 m of conduit. BOXT includes up to 5 m of cable, a hole up to 500 mm, a Type A RCD/RCBO, up to 3 m of conduit, testing and NICEIC certification.
Can I get a government grant?
Only if you rent, own a flat, or have on-street parking only and install a permanent cross-pavement channel. The OZEV grants pay 75% of the cost up to £500 and are funded until 31 March 2027. If you own a house with a driveway, there is no OZEV home grant. Check with our OZEV grant checker.
How long does installation take?
Pod says installation usually takes about two hours. BOXT says no longer than half a day, unless there are complications.
Is it worth it?
A wallbox costs the same per kWh as a 3-pin lead; what it buys is speed. It fills a car in a 5–7 hour cheap window, and some smart tariffs need a supported charger. See granny charger vs wallbox.
