EV tariffs
UK EV tariffs compared: off-peak rate, window, rules and the cost of 8,000 miles
Rates last checked: 15 October 2026 · SmartShift UK
This page lists the UK EV tariffs I could find on 15 October 2026 and checks each rate on the supplier’s own page that day. Each row says where the number came from and how far it could be verified. Anything that varies by region, or that the supplier only shows in a postcode quote, is marked.
“Typical EV” on this page is the middle (median) car of the 142 in EV charging costs by car: 277 Wh a mile, which is 3.61 miles per kWh, calculated the same way as that page. 8,000 miles ÷ 3.61 = 2,216 kWh a year. The yearly figure is that energy × the off-peak rate, rounded to the pound, as if every mile were charged inside the cheap window. Standing charges, day-rate use and charging losses are left out.

| Ofgem price cap (for comparison) | 26.32p | Single rate, all day | £583 | 7.3p | Verified |
On these assumptions the off-peak unit cost runs from £137 to £295 a year, against £583 at the price cap. The gap between tariffs is smaller than it looks once you add the parts this table leaves out: the day rate for everything you use outside the window, the standing charge, and any charger you have to buy to qualify.
OVO Charge Anytime monthly plans
OVO also sells Charge Anytime as a fixed monthly plan instead of pay as you go. Its Standard plan is £26.50 a month (£318 a year), covering 700 miles a month of smart charging at home plus a £120 public charging voucher. OVO says the plan suits about 8,000 miles a year, and works out its mileage at 4 miles per kWh. Its page doesn’t say how miles are counted for a less efficient car, so this page doesn’t convert the plan to a per-kWh rate. Premium is £36 a month for 1,000 miles a month. Rates are the 12-month fixed versions on sale on 15 October 2026, Direct Debit. Octopus lists both fixed versions as on sale until 20 October 2026, so the next versions may be priced differently.

What the table can’t tell you
- Your day rate. Most suppliers only show it in a postcode quote. On a whole-home EV tariff, everything you use outside the window is billed at it, so a low night rate with a high day rate can cost more overall. Get quotes and multiply by your own day and night kWh from your smart meter data, or put them into the whole-bill EV tariff calculator, which has every tariff on this page pre-filled.
- Whether your setup qualifies. Smart tariffs (Intelligent Octopus Go, Next Drive Smart, EV Optimise, Charge Anytime, Hive Power+) need a supported car or charger. Fixed-window tariffs (EDF GoElectric, Octopus Go, Next Drive, EV Power, EV Saver, So EV) work with any EV and charger, but still need a smart meter.
- Whether your week fits the window. A 7.4 kW charger adds about 37 kWh in 5 hours, 44.4 kWh in 6 and 51.8 kWh in 7. The typical EV above needs about 6.1 kWh a day on average, so most drivers fit any of them. See miles from one overnight charge.
- Exit fees and term. Several are 12-month fixes with exit fees (shown where the page states one). Pod Point Plug & Power is a two-year tariff tied to a charger purchase.

Questions people ask
Which UK EV tariff has the cheapest off-peak rate?
Of the tariffs checked on suppliers’ own pages on 15 October 2026, the lowest published off-peak rate is EDF’s Pod Point Plug & Power at 6.18p/kWh, which needs a Pod Point charger bought through EDF. Without a charger bundle, the lowest is EDF GoElectric at 6.66p from 23:00 to 06:00. The cheapest overall depends on your day rate and standing charge, which most suppliers only show in a quote.
How much does 8,000 miles cost on an EV tariff?
For a typical EV at 3.61 miles per kWh (2,216 kWh), the off-peak unit cost ranges from £137 at 6.18p to £295 at OVO’s 13.33p, against £583 at the 26.32p price cap. That assumes every mile is charged in the cheap window and leaves out standing charges and losses.
Do I need a smart charger for an EV tariff?
Not always. EDF GoElectric, Octopus Go, E.ON Next Drive, British Gas EV Power, ScottishPower EV Saver and So EV work with any EV and charger on a fixed overnight window. Smart tariffs such as Intelligent Octopus Go, Next Drive Smart, EV Optimise and Charge Anytime need a compatible car or charger. All of them need a smart meter.
Is the off-peak rate for the whole house?
On the fixed-window tariffs listed here, the suppliers say the off-peak rate applies to all your electricity in those hours. Intelligent Octopus Go also gives the whole home the low rate during smart-charging slots outside 23:30–05:30. OVO Charge Anytime and ScottishPower EV Optimise only discount the car’s smart-charged electricity.
Why don’t you show every day rate?
Most suppliers only publish the day rate and standing charge in a postcode quote. Where a supplier publishes them (Octopus through its tariff data, Good Energy in its tariff labels, E.ON in a footnote), they are shown with the date and any caveat.
Is this financial advice?
No. It is a dated comparison of published rates and arithmetic. Check your own quote and your supplier’s current terms before you switch.
Not financial advice. These are worked examples from published rates and EV-Database consumption estimates, for planning only. Your own tariff, day rate, standing charge, car, driving and weather will change the numbers. Check your bill and your supplier’s current terms before you switch or buy anything.
